“I'm disappointed. Yes, I mean that. I re-read Divergent and Insurgent before I even crack opened Allegiant so the entire series was fresh in my mind and that's why I can write this review fully expressing how I feel.
Allegiant picked up right where Insurgent left off with Tris and the gang finding out about Edith Prior and from there it feels like Insurgent never ended and the start of Allegiant was just another chapter continuing on from Insurgent. Ironically enough, that's what I said in my review of Insurgent last year... that it felt like it was a filler for Allegiant and in my opinion, I was proven right.
I feel like I say this over and over for every single final book in a series but I will say it again. When I pick up the final book in a series, I want to feel closure and I want feel contented about the series as a whole yet still have room in my mind for speculation about what happens after it all. Did I feel that way with Allegiant? - Yes and No.
I think this book as a whole felt more like an explanation. Even though there was a story it didn't get me that excited. I just felt like I was in a museum trudging along stopping at exhibits, getting explanations about everything in the 'Divergent' world. We all want to know why this happened and how that happened but those kinds of things are mean for series guides not finale novels. Then the way things unfolded felt like a bit of a betrayal to me because when we read series, we invest our emotions into these characters. I connected with these people and for their story to end that way, it was half arsed to me.
When I read Divergent in 2011, it was the first dystopian novel that I had ever picked up and I loved it and to this day it's one of my favorite books in the genre. So for me, I felt as if it could've only gotten better from there and unfortunately it didn't. I liked Insurgent and I liked Allegiant but it's nowhere near the quality of Divergent. I know some people won't agree with me but that's life... one person can love something while another finds it mediocre and I that's how I found Allegiant... good but mediocre.”
