I love Lee Smith's writing, but I have to admit it took a couple of tries to get past the first few pages of this book, though I'm glad now I did. I was thrown off a little by the "spitfire" reference. I generally detest any Southern fiction book that pitches its female main character as "spunky" or "irreverent" or refers to "hairdos" or any other very tired, stereotypical reference to Southern women. Didn’t Like It

I was disappointed in this book. For at least the first half, it was too similar to her earlier novels. The second half seemed to be improving, but it didn't hold my interest. I really liked her first couple of books, so this was a letdown.
