• Hanna Marin: Popular girl at Rosewood. She was best friends with Ali and now she is getting strange text messages from "A", just like Spencer, Aria, and Emily. At the beginning of this book she is in a hospital with a coma because she got hit by a SUV.
• Spencer Hastings: Stole her sister's essay and now she is up for an award with that essay. She also has issues with her sister. One of Ali's original friends, she's gettng texts from A too. She helps plans Hanna's party with Mona.
• Mona Vanderwaal: Hanna's best friend at Rosewood. She used to be a loser but now she's at the top.
• Alison Dilaurentis: Went missing for three years, then she was found dead. Police are trying to locate the person who killed her.
• Melissa Hastings: Spencer's older sister and Ian's girlfriend.
• Emily Fields: On the Rosewood swim team. She is lesbian and at first her parents don't approve. Friends with Aria, Hanna and Spencer, and is trying to find "A".
• Lucas Beattie: A boy that likes Hanna. They kissed a few times. He is also Mona's ex-boyfriend.
• Ian Thomas: Mellissa's boyfriend who is accused of killing Ali since they had a secret relationship.
• Maya St. Germain: Emily's girlfriend.
• Byron Montgomery: Aria and Mike's father who is in a relationship with Meredith.
• Mike Motgomery: Aria's younger brother.
• Darren Wilden: A police officer involved in solving the murder of Alison DiLaurentis. Used to go to Rosewood Day.
• Helene: Emily's aunt who is very strict.
• Ezra: Aria's ex-boyfriend and old AP English teacher. He moves to Rhode Island and gives Aria a Shakespeare bobble head, one of his most prized possetions, to remember him.
• Dr. Geist: The doctor who is in charge of Hanna whilel she was in the hospital.

• Aria Montgomery: Aria's problems just keep piling up. Her mom and brother are refusing to speak to her. She recently watched her old friend get plowed down by an SUV. She's being forced to live with her betrayer-of-a-dad and his evil girlfriend. Her beloved Ezra is moving to Rhode Island. But what she doesn't know, is that it has to get worse, before it gets better....
