This was the first Cather novel I read. It was so good, I had to read more. Cather's writing is both straightforward and poetic. It helps if you are a midwesterner or are interested in midwestern stories.

The first half is the best. Cather even admits she should have stopped after the midpoint. But it's also kind of cool to see how an author dreamed of the character after the book's end.
