People of the Book: A Novel

Amazon Best of the Month, January 2008: One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an... (read more)

Overview: Groups

History - Fiction 497 books / 637 members / 850 posts For any good Historical Novels you have read and Authors you want to rave about.
What are you reading? 2320 books / 5547 members / 12805 posts A place to talk about books you have read/reading of any genre, or any book talk in general.
Book Chat 698 books / 1858 members / 5376 posts Rather than being about a particular genre or author or book this group is about books and reading in general.

Topics have ranged from such things as favorite bookstore, whether you re-read your favorite books, what kind of bookmarks you use, where you read, what you read, i.e. stand alone or epics or short stories or poems and how you arrange your bookshelves at home as well as how you arrange your Shelfari shelves, to name a few.

It's fun to see how much we have in common with others and maybe learn some new ideas at the same time.

50 Book Challenge! 2902 books / 2864 members / 16241 posts When asked about the new Amazon Kindle product, Steve Jobs CEO of Apple computer had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Welcome to the the 50 Book Challenge, where we fly in the face of Steve Jobs.

Basically .... the challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

Start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books. It is a very good idea to bookmark (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites) your post for easy location for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

"In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.", Mortimer Adler

*This is a group for book lovers who prefer to take an under-promise and over-deliver approach to their reading. It's also for those of us who quake at the thought of "committing" to read 50 books in a twelve month period.

The challenge: Set a goal for yourself to read and enjoy 2 books each month.(If 1 would be a s-t-r-e-t-c-h goal for you, that's great too! If you crave more than 2, go for it. It's your challenge :-)

If you have been keeping track of all that you've read since January 2008, feel free to include those books towards your goal. If you haven't been keeping track, simply begin now.

How it works: Put your name in the subject line of a new post, and start to add your book list. From that point on you can add to your list by replying to the first post in your thread. If you prefer to keep your thread free of others' questions or comments then you may want to include this request in your original post title (e.g. "No comments please"). If you would like questions or comments within your thread, why not include "Comments welcome" in the title? If you feel inspired to write mini-reviews or comments on any book in your list, please do. Whatever feels right for you!

The group shelf:You are also invited to add your 24 + books to the group shelf. If you did write a comment or review please also add this to your book on the shelf. In an effort to keep things simple, we're only using the "Books We've Read" shelf.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions or suggestions for improving the group. We'd love to hear from you!
Suspense and Thrillers 437 books / 1589 members / 4406 posts If you love thrillers, come join us! Some of our favorite authors are Harlan Coben, James Patterson, Lee Child, Greg Iles, David Baldacci, Lisa Unger, Amanda Stevens, Gregg Olsen, J.T. Ellison, Erica Spindler and many, many more.

So come in and join us. Tell us your favorite thriller. Also, before you click that "Discussion" button, please know there are several pages of discussions going on. Take the time to look through and comment on as many as you'd like.

Our 2008 group reads September Group Read- "RABBIT IN THE MOON" by Deborah and Joel Shlian

October Group Read -"Black Out" by Lisa Unger

November Group Read-A Reason for Dying, by Wilfred Bereswill

NOTE: If you are an author of a mystery, suspense/thriller book and would like to lead a group discussion in a group read of your book, please send a private message to the owner of the group.

Come join the fun if you'd like. Have a question, just ask! :)

Flips Flipping Pages: A site for Filipino shelfarians from all over the world

A community of people who love to read, collect, swap, mooch, talk about, sell, touch, smell, look at, give away books.

A support group for book addicts. Though most support groups help you quit, here we enable you, encourage you to get more, buy more, read more, learn more!

A book club that meets every 2nd Saturday of the month.

A bulletin board of book-related announcements of events, sales, promotions, and other stuff that feed on our book frenzy.

A discussion board of ideas, mini-reviews, book recos, games, questions and debates from intellectual to inane, asaran, kwento, songs, poems, advice, dedications, slum book exchanges, at kung ano ano pa.

Flipper: YOU, if you have made that excellent decision to join the group.

The Flippers: Some of us have a lot in common. Many have their mothers to blame for getting us hooked on books. (Thanks, Moms). Many of us have found ourselves sitting on the floor of Book Sale branches scrounging for the best buy. Many of us went through a Nancy Drew phase. Many of us consider our books as valued possessions worth saving in a fire.

Yet, we are also diverse. Some are into classics, Filipino literature, chicklit, fantasy, fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, serious novels, fluffy pretty books. Some of us like our books crisp, clean, and covered up in plastic. Some of us prefer the musty, dog-eared books fished from a pre-used book bin so we can inhale the history of its previous owners. A poll on favorite authors will reveal just how diverse we are. The Filipino diaspora also means we run the whole spectrum in terms of geographical location and cultural influences. Our opinions differ, and that's what makes this a rich and enriching place.

We're split just about midway between monobookists (look it up here) and polybookists, toilet readers and toilet wall starers.

We're all Filipinos -- whether it's by blood, by birth, by marriage, or by choice. And we all love books and talking about books.

The Rules:
1) Be respectful. -- Keep it friendly. No personal attacks. No insults. No name-calling. No flames.

Debates are fine. You can bust your veins dissing or defending the works of authors, arguing the merits and demerits of a literary piece till the sun comes out. But respect the members. We don’t have to like each other here. But we have to respect differences of opinions, personalities, and perspectives.

Remember that when somebody does not think the way you do, that does not make them stupid. The fact that their ideas are different from yours does not make them uneducated. Beware those who cannot respect other people's world views; it could be your own ignorance and narrow mindedness showing. Let's just be grateful that we can learn from others' perspectives.

2) No profanity.

3) No endorsement of illegal materials.

4) No pornographic content. No links to pornographic sites.

5) No black propaganda against any of the members and other personalities.

6) Authors, publishers, and book distributors may promote their products and events. Keep it book-related. No ads for realty, no invitations to MLM events, no invites to seminars that do not have anything to do with books.

We might concede to free food and wine tasting events though.

Book Snobs 11 books / 84 members / 86 posts This book group is for people who are picky about what they read. We don't read bestsellers and the latest Danielle Steel (or if we do, we certainly don't tell people about it!) Yes, we are book snobs and proud of it. This group is for seeking out the best books and sharing them with other book lovers.
Historical Fiction 555 books / 567 members / 802 posts I was shocked there was no "historical fiction" group so I'm going to try this.
Your books can be from any era and style as long as they are historical fiction! I am always on the lookout for new books so please add/suggest as many as you like! As you can see from my shelf and the group's shelf we have a loose interpretation of what is "historical fiction" and a varied taste in books.
Authors are welcome to post, but please do not use this group to advertise for your book unless it caters to our interests!
Another small request from me......Please keep all discussions civil and try to respect other people's views and opinions while posting on this group.
If you decide to join...welcome!

What is BookMooch? from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BookMooch
BookMooch is an international, on-line book exchange community founded by John Buckman in July 2006. Membership is open to anyone and is free. BookMooch allows its users to exchange books using a points system. Members earn points by adding books to their inventories, by sending books to other members, and by providing feedback when they receive books. The points earned can then be used to “mooch” books from other members. All books “cost” the same number of points, with a multiple point surcharge for international mooches. Members may opt to send books only within their own country, worldwide, or worldwide upon request.
