I liked this one, particularly with the change in scenery to NY and LA and the different characters. I wasn't such a big fan of Dry Ice so was happy to read this one which seemed easier to follow and didn't require so much recall from an earlier book. There were a few parts that didn't totally hang together and tie all the pieces up for me, but then again maybe I missed some connections along the way. Anyway, I always enjoy reading Stephen White's novels and the twists and turns his characters take. Can't wait for the next one.

Stephen White is my favorite author and it all takes place in Boulder, CO which is my favorite town.
Start with his first Dr. Alan Gregory novel if you plan to pick him up. He is THE BEST.

This was a good read. I've enjoyed Stephen White especially since he is from Boulder and stages his books there as well. His books are worth reading.

I always look forward to the new Alan Gregory book, and this one did not disappoint. I was sorry that Alan's wife, Lauren did not have a more important part in the story, and didn't particularly like the way we left the state of Alan and Lauren's marriage, but the author certainly left himself open for another installment. I look forward to it!

I have read all of Stephen Whites books, and loved most of them, but this one was not one of my favorites. Not terrible, but not a fav.

Dead Time by Stephen White is the most recent entry in the Dr. Alan Gregory series, and let me be the first to tell you that White is back on his game. Alan and his wife Lauren are struggling to cope with all of the revelations from the previous book, Dry Ice, as well as their new adopted son. Lauren and Grace, their daughter, go to the Netherlands to find the daughter Lauren put up for adoption years before. Jonas, the new son, is going to spend a few weeks with his mother's relatives in New York, so Alan takes an apartment in NYC to be near him. Merideth, Alan's ex, calls Alan and asks him to investigate the disappearance of the surrogate she's hired to carry her baby. There are multiple storylines that weave in and out of each other, but White handles them all with style. Sam and Alan's relationship is unsteady after the events of the previous book, and through their detective work, they come to a new and deeper friendship. White's books about Alan were starting to get a little stale. He and Lauren were a little too happy, and nearly every book involved some kind of danger for Lauren and Grace. While I wasn't thrilled with Dry Ice, it should be seen as a pivotal book in this series, because it's turned everything around. Alan is no longer predictable, flirting with alcoholism and infidelity, and even Lauren is hiding some secrets. The series suddenly seems fresh and full of possibility.

The next book in the Alan Gregory series. This time Alan is taking some time off from his practice. The book opens with the reception after the funeral of his long time friend Adrienne had been killed in a terrorist's bombing and her son Jonas had witnessed her death. Adrienne had left Jonas's care to Alan and his wife Lauren. Jonas's uncle Martin didn't care for the idea and wanted Jonas. Alan says no, but will let Jonas go to New York to visit his uncle Martin and his family. Alan thinks you can't have too much family and maybe the uncle will relent when he sees how attached Jonas is to Alan and Bolder. Lauren takes Alan and her daughter Grace on a long awaited trip to Holland to search for the daughter Lauren gave up when she was in college. While she is doing that, Alan travels to New York with Jonas and sub-lets a apartment so that he is close at hand and Jonas can spend weekends with him in the city. All of this is working out well, when Jonas tells Alan that he really is ok and Alan can go home to Bolder. They set up times to call and a secret code word for Jonas to say if he is having trouble or wants Alan to come running to get him. Alan just get home when he receives a phone call from his ex-wife Meridith. She pulls him into a mystery that goes back years to a camping trip at the Grand Canyon involving Meredeth's fiancé and five friends who's lives were changed forever when a young woman mysteriously vanished from the Canyon floor. Alan enlists the help of friend and detective Sam Purdy. Alan finds himself pitted against new demons and unseen enemies as he tries to uncover the connection between the unexplained disappearance at the Grand Canyon and Meredeth's missing surrogate. These books really can't be read out of order. Each book picks up where the last one left off and themes carry over from one book to another, just like with any good series. A must read for all Stephen White fans.
