The story is told by the main character who dominates the book. His coarse street language at first startles you, then draws you into the lives of the people who exist in this poisoned place. The realism of his tone keeps you fascinated to the end.
The book however is yet another view of the poverty and corruption that is now so common place in many novels set in India. But, it is also a book of survival, strengths, weaknesses and the indomitability of the human spirit. It is worth reading. ”
“Amazing tale of life of poverty and quest for sex. Almost didn't finish it 'cause it's so sad. Has to do with influence of Americans, too.”

“A must read. THe book relives the BHopal Tragedy through a bou twisted and contorted by it.Moved me enough to join the Bhopal Clean Up Movement that is aiming to rid the town of tonnes of chemical left by the DOW Company causing them to seep into its watertable and fighting for fair compensation to the victims”

Rare, then, that Sinha's second novel should have recieved as much attention as it did. Stylistically closer to Rushdie than any of his supposed literary off-spring though with a more concentrated political focus. A much needed reassesment of the relationship between rural India and international business which will continue to abuse its populace.”

(Chemical fiasco 20 years ago - still no real compensation for the hundreds of thousands affected). Fantastic characters, amusing, crass, real. Completely overwhelming in its laying out of place and character.”

It chronicles the aftermath of the Bhopal disaster through the eyes of "Animal", a young man who life and body are forever changed by the chemical disaster. He is a wonderful, complex, irreverent character, and his story, through the art of fiction, holds to light the horror of corporate greed and juxtaposes it with the beauty of the human spirit. The storytelling is masterful. I could NOT put this book down.”

The author's triumph in making this India novel different from the scores before it, is the scabrous voice of the street urchin named Animal.
Shortlisted for the Booker prize, this book delivers a scathing riposte to the cynics who claim that advertising writers can't write literature.”
