“I bought this book for two reasons. First the comparisons on the book's jacket to Larry McMurtry, whom I love. Second because of the bison on the cover. My father has recently started raising buffalo and I thought that a little fiction with them in it would be interesting.
The story was good and the characters interesting. A few of the scenarios in the book were a bit beyond belief but such is to be expected. I thought the treatment of gender and sexual preference in the book was well-handled.
The comparisons to McMurtry were valid but Warren doesn't yet have the command of story. I imagine she will get there in time. I'll certainly be picking up her next novel.
As for the buffalo... sadly there were there only briefly. But they served their purpose: the gave the lead character a job and got me to pick up the book!”
