Well-written, interesting characters but the plot ... I mean, it seemed like there was a plot, I kept waiting for a plot, but it just seemed like memory after insight after memory after consideration after supposing after memory. I couldn't finish. I hate not finishing. Especially a good author.

An extremely difficult book to read, both in writing style and the fact that you don't really care about any of the characters. I could not wait to finish this book and never open it again.

Painful to read but Enright is a wonderful author. She has the personalities in a large Irish family "nailed"--and I should know!

This one took some pages to get me, but once it did, it never let me go. Haunted and haunting, seeing a story of loss through the always hazy lens of memory.

The nine surviving Hegarty siblings gather together in the family home in Dublin for the wake of their brother Liam. In the observance of a life now ended, Liam's sister Veronica (the narrator) recalls the past - both real and perhaps imagined - to try to understand the why and the how of Liam's life and death.

A very complicated book, rambling thru time, and unpleasant memories.
