I don't have any actual experience of sign language, nor do I need to. This book, as Carol describes it, has interlaced chapters and this works really well. The Al-Sayyid story becomes a good backdrop to the meat of the book which really is an fascinating history of sign language, a detailed study into linguistics and the question of our innate ability to develop language.
I really enjoyed it, but had to persevere in parts when it got down to the nitty gritty of grammar and linguistic processes (conjugating verbs, pronouns, etc) wish I'd paid attention at school!
