Strange but good - monsters, ghosts, and eccentric characters make this story engaging, and still it is somehow believable. One of the most satisfying reads I've had in a while.

This book started out w/so much potential and I swear the author's phone rang and she decided just to wrap it up and end it. A big frustrating waste of time!

All the mini plots intertwined into the main story really held my interest.

The details in this bookm got to be too daunting--almost unrealistic. There is a spernatural element to the book with the monster in the sea that I think is symbolic, but I don't think it worked with the storyline. I thought the premise of the book was good, but the details just weighted the book as a chore to read.

I enjoyed this book, though I had issues with it. It never did make sense to me why Vi wouldn't just tell Willie who her father is. Also, I'm not sure what the ghosts and, more importantly, the monster symbolize. Both were benevolent forces. By contrast are we to understand that the real monsters of Templeton are human? That seems obvious. The majority of MOT concerns itself with the past and present. I think its supernatural element is its nod to the future and the author's existential, maybe even subconscious, preoccupation manifest. For me, the monsters were the most fun.

I really enjoyed many things about this book: set in upstate New York, the whimsical aspects of repeating history, friendly ghosts and monsters accepted as real, genealogy - a favorite subject of my own - a young, wry woman's point of view, and the shifting narrative from the main character, to others', past and present, to non humans. Given all this I hoped to love this book, but I didn't quite. Some parts and some characters left me a bit cold, some sections got a bit slow, and unfortunately by the end I was starting to lose interest (though the very ending was chilling and poetic and I'm glad I made it to it!) I do recommend this book but am sad it came so close to being a true favorite, but didn't quite make it.. I'm adding it to my favorite list anyway because it came so close!

Pretty good, you'd think it would be pretty boring but it's actually pretty amusing for history
