This is an excellent story, and the realization that it is, in fact a true story, makes it even more interesting. I would recommend it to anyone that is a history buff or that has an interest in the experience of the Jews during WWII.The descriptions of the animals, and the flora and fauna of Poland were so realistic that I felt that I was there! Written from the perspective of a Polish Catholic woman living during the war gave it a fresh perspective. A Great Read!!!
I am trying to add this book to my "I plan to read" shelf, but it keeps going on my "already read" shelf. This really really sucks.
has it been fixed yet? i am also trying to add it
Put your cursor over the book (if it is on your shelf as "I have read this"), and use the down arrow on the right. From there, unclick "I have read" and put the check mark next to "I plan to read", or if it is not on your shelf, instead of clicking on the + sign to "add to my shelf" click on the down arrow and click on "I plan to read".
Wonderful book and wonderful story telling by Ms. Ackerman. Now the Warsaw Zoo is on my list of places to visit and I don't even like zoo's. But the story is just so compelling, I'm always stunned by mans inhumanity to man and at the same time amazed at the human spirit and the courage of people to fight injustice. The story of Jan & Antonina Zabinski and their zoo during the German occupatiion of WWll is a lovely gift to the world.
Diane Ackerman gives an excellent, extensive discussion of The Zookeeper's Wife on Science Friday. The audio is available at: http://www.sciencefriday.com/program/archives/200801185
I thought this was a very powerful book describing the real wartime lives of many who lived through those terrible times. I personally knew someone who had been hidden behind a mirror for two years - something I have never forgotten - and it brought all those people and memories of pictures back into my minds eye again. It is a very good book to read if you have any doubt that these things existed.
Thanks for your review, I am almost done with this wonderful book. Another book that I just finished that you may be interested in is A Woman In Berlin. I felt the same way, that this book really beought home the incredible circumstances of those times.
I visited the zoo and now I know the history behind it. Good read!
