“Really enjoyed Krugman's book. Of course, he was preaching to the choir with me too I guess. Anyway, Krugman, a Nobel Prize winning economist, takes us on en economic tour of America from Post-Reconstruction until today's times. He offers explanations of our high and low points. Now I don't know a ton about economics, but it made sense to me, even though some of his conclusions ran a little counter to what I always learned in some of my history classes.
Finally. Krugman calls for a "new New Deal," echoing FDR's successful campaigns to establish a social safety net in the 1930's, particularly Social Security. Krugmans New Deal would have true National Health Care as it's centerpiece, he argues that it can be done and become an accepted American institution, just like Social Security and Medicare.
A very timely book to read right now and I agree with him pretty much all the way.”
“I had to read this book for my AP Government Class. It was extremely hard for me to get through, especially since I disagreed with many of the points brought up in the book. ”

Krugman goes all out on the offensive against Republicans and takes us all the way back to the 1920's to establish his points. I feel that his arguments are sound, wonderfully explained and justified. I won't even begin to lie and say that he offers an objective point of view, as the negatives of his arguments are never really pointed out. All in all though I agree with his message, but feel that the cost of such ideas wasn't fully explained.
The book also does a good job of establishing terms, history and the reason for such beliefs with examples throughout history to support each. Wartime economies, movement conservative and the concentration of wealth in this country are topics covered.
If you're a conservative you'll probably read this book and vomit. I've been reading "Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One" by Thomas Sowell as a kind of counter argument if you will. While Sowell's book does make some valid points it has ultimately pushed me even closer to the beliefs and views express in Krugman's work.
I think this is worth a read for everyone if nothing more than a shot at "the other side of the coin". But we know who this book is intended for. People like me =)”
“Krugman downplays his vitrolic attack on Republicans found in his columns in the NTY and focuses on developing an agenda for 2008 that is based on establishing universal health care, preferably government run. Krugman does blame republicans, more specifically"movement republicans", for what he sees as a return to Gilded Age inequality and he makes a pretty good case for himself. The book is an easy read, his arguments are relatively succint and he doesn't pad the book with too many examples. It's an excellent foundation for any progressive concerned about what's going to happen in 08.”
