- Zoey Redbird: A fledging at the House of Night, and the main character. She has an affinity for all five elements. She is High Priestess in training and the leader of the Dark Daughters. Zoey has an amazing relationship with her grandmother, but a very difficult one with her mother.
- Stevie Rae Johnson: Zoey's best friend whom Zoey discovered was actually alive ('undead') at the end of the previous book. She has an affinity for earth which Zoey believes should help her become "alive" again.
- Erik Night: Zoey's boyfriend, described as the hottest, most popular guy at the House of Night.
- Loren Blake: Handsome vampire Poet, and part time professor at the House of Night.
- Damien Maslin: One of Zoey's friends. He has an affinity for air. He is gay, and in a relationship with Jack.
- Erin Bates: One of Zoey's friends. She has an affinity for water. She calls Shaunee "Twin" even though they're not even related.
- Shaunee Cole: One of Zoey's friends. She has an affinity for fire, calls Erin "twin" even though they're not even related (they have a lot in common, even finishing each other's sentences).
- Jack Twist: Erik's roommate. Jack is gay, and in a relationship with Damien.
- Heath Luck: Zoey's childhood boyfriend and now her "almost-boyfriend". Zoey tried several times to break up with him, but due to the imprint, found it difficult. He is human, and he imprinted with Zoey until she became imprinted with Loren Blake, which broke her imprint with Heath.
- Neferet: High Priestess of Tusla's House of Night, and Zoey's mentor.
- Sylvia Redbird: Zoey's grandmother. She is of Cherokee descent, and is the only family member Zoey truly loves.
- Professor Nolan: Vampire drama professor.
- Darius: A Son of Erebus. Like all adult vampires, he is described as being handsome.
- Nala: Zoey's Cat. Reminds Zoey of a golden lioness.
- Nyx: The goddess of night.
- Aphrodite LaFonte: A rich, stuck up girl who is a sort of frenemy of Zoey's. She has visions of the future.
- John Heffer: Zoey's step-dad, whom she hates
- T. J. Hawkins: Erik's friend.
- Linda Heffer: Zoey's mother.
- Kayla: Zoey's human ex-best friend.
- Paul Montgomery: Zoey's biological father.
