In the style of Tim Leheye, this book is relatively plot less, and, as confessed by the author, not meant for publication and mostly a vehicle for sermonizing. On the surface, it is about a family that loses a daughter to a serial killer. In the end, it is a dialogue between the child’s fathe and God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. As with all religious fiction, it takes liberties with what we know and what we hope to know about god. The reasoning is circular, and whenever logic enters, a new “rule” is created that God must follow--”I can’t tell you what is next for you…” but he can tell him, as a form of humor, that the CD he is listening is going to be made by a certain band. Who makes the rules? The writing is not very good. Again, what makes this type of literature difficult is the one dimensionality of the characters. It’s difficult to have any kind of vicarious catharsis when the characters are so flat.

What starts out as a book about a distasteful subject (the abduction and murder of a young girl) turns into an incredible discussion on spirituality, specifically Christian spirituality.
This was a book club choice and made for a very interesting discussion about religion, forgiveness, victim impact statements, spirituality.

We have previously read The lovely bones by Anna Sebold (similar type of story - murder of young girl and father's reaction) but this has a very different ending.

I don't think I have ever read a book that made me "think" as much as this one.

Finding your way back...from grief...from loosing your faith... what God would have to say about tragic events.
