As a lover of Great Expectations, it was nice and refreshing to reminisce Charles Dickens' classic. Having another story to find out about along side that was also nice. It seemed a sweet, simple story that that gave a contrast to a somewhat difficult read of Dickens. However, I found the resolve of the story a little tedious. Once the main character was off the island, it was as though nothing had happened, and suddenly in a few pages she was all grown up and a graduate! I just can't seem to fathom the mix between such a roar and difficult living situation, to one where none of that mattered any more and where our usual reality comes into play. I feel that conversion was rushed; and i suppose i didn't really understand the significance of 'Popeye's' wife in the story, other than a way of finding out what certain aspects of his personality meant. I enjoyed it, just not from the point when the island was 'no more'. The conversion seemed a little too easy, and it was quite an anti-climax to something that was built up so strongly for most of the book.

This book is one of the best I have read in a long time. It says so much about what it means to read and lose oneself in a story. The book works on many, many different levels. Very thought provoking and extremely well written.
