Good, solid old-fashioned mystery set in Victorian England (in the Palace, no less!). Satisfying mystery.

I am a huge Anne Perry fan, so it pains me to give one of her books only one star, but this particular outing was stuffed full of irrelevant detail that had nothing to do with the murder, and made it hard slogging to get through the book.

I am a huge Anne Perry fan, so it pains me to give one of her books only one star, but this particular outing was stuffed full of irrelevant detail that had nothing to do with the murder, and made it hard slogging to get through the book.

The premise was excellent - a murdered prostitute turning up in a linen closet at Buckingham Palace after the Prince of Wales and several of his houseguests partook of "services" from the murdered women and a couple of her compatriots.

Naturally Inspector Pitt is summoned, this clearly being a special branch situation.

If Perry had stuck to relating it to the investigation of the murder I wouldn't have minded the large sections about the politics of the Prince and the men (who were guests at the Palace with their wives) trying to build a railway in Africa. However, she also put in lengthy sections about the dysfunctional marriages of all the men, all of whom were suspects in the murder.

By halfway through, this book felt more like an episode of the Dr. Phil show, than an Anne Perry murder mystery. I was disappointed in this outing by Inspector Pitt. Hoping Perry gets back to focusing on the murder next time and leaves out the self-help stuff!

I am trying very hard to read this novel, but even with the opening of a homicide, well, I just cannot seem to get into it. I cannot make it past he first chapter, this is very rare for me to be sure...I keep placing this novel down to read another, finish one, then pick this one back up again, and it is feeling like torture to get it started. I pray it gets interesting soon. I don't know what it is that is so droll to me...it should be very lively and interesting, but...

I hope I am just extremely distracted, because I know of Anne Perry to be a phenomenal talent. My apologies to anyone who I may offend.

Another great Thomas & Charlotte Pitt book, though Charlotte barely appears in this one. Pitt is faced with solving 2 gruesome murders committed in Buckingham Palace and must do it quickly & discreetly. Pitt's maid, Gracie, is called in to help. Perry kept me guessing til the end and neatly and cleverly tied up the loose ends. Plus readers get a peek into the royal life.

Anne Perry never ceases to amaze with her Victorian era mysteries. This one has Thomas Pitt trying to solve a brutal murder of a Prostitute in Buckingham Palace. Gracie is called upon to help by obtaining a position on the staff. Thomas has to make decisions to keep the Royalty from being scandeled. He has to make a rough judgement call, whether to speak up at a most embarrasssing time for the Prince of Wales. Pitt is a good and honorable man.

Not one of her best mystery novels. Fascinating look at 'behind the stairs' Buckingham Palace tho.

I've read several of the Thomas Pitt mysteries, enjoyed all of them and this was no exception. Really good book and outstanding in its genre.
