History of India's independence. The book focuses on Nehru and British viceroy Montbatten. I really enjoyed the book.

I think the author spends far too much time on flakey details regarding the British royal family during this World War II era. I want to turn pages and live the dry-throated, wet blooded reality of Indians prior to their country's independence and Pakistan's partition—not the lemonade served when Princess Elizabeth first meets Phillip.

I just finished it. I was a little put off by the gossipy nature of parts of it. The author goes on at length, for example, about irrelevant details about British royal life. But I did learn a lot about those chaotic times, and had a much better sense of both Nehru and Gandhi (about whom I thought I knew a lot) and both Mountbattens (about whom I knew I knew nothing).
