O'Malley continues to deliver up a satisfying mix of awesome story and awesome art (though the latter may be a bit too cartoony for the tastes of some fans of manga and graphic novels). Half-ninjas, old dudes with samurai swords, chick-on-chick action - this volume's got it all. Scott continues his ongoing battle with Ramona's evil exes, while also having to contend with a new job, a new place (possibly), and the l-word (no, not "lesbian," the other one).”

There are several (welcome) additions to this book, the main one being that Ramona's fourth evil ex is a girl. There were several laugh-out-loud moments in the story when Scott is feverishly trying to understand why this girl is attacking him, until the eventual realization dawns on him. The evil ex-girlfriend is also a big step up personality-wise from the lifeless psychic vegan character from the third novel.
Aside from Ramona's ex-girlfriend, Scott is also pursued by Knive's Dad, which gives the author an excuse to include twice as many action scenes, which injects much-needed life into a novel full of aimless, rambling conversations that plague the series at this point. Scott's cluelessness can only be exploited so many times before it begins to wear thin in the joke department.
Thankfully, the vibrant illustrations come to the rescue, creating the illusion that Scott's mostly-dull life is actually quite exciting. ”

I'd watched the movie before delving into the books, and now that the books are going in different directions from the movie, it's much more enjoyable. The plotlines here are fresh and all I want is more, so it's certainly doing its job. ”
