Deaf, mute, vampire hero. African-American, cop heroine. Just couldn't get into it, despite the fact that I really wanted to. Quit reading about 200 pages in.

Brandon is a one of a kind hero. His story is heartbreaking. At one point, I almost put the book down, thinking why? How could someone be cruel to their own grandson like this? If you like tortured heroes, you must read this book. I like that Ms. Reinke threw out the rule book when she wrote this book. She was not afraid to make Brandon vulnerable and the opposite of what a lot of romance novel heroes are. That doesn't make him any less appealing. Brandon has been abused and mistreated by his family after he was horribly wounded and almost died during a botched robbery. The scene where we see this happen just broke something inside of me. The aftermath is that he is a deaf-mute. His family is intolerant of his imperfection, yet they won't let him escape to find a better life. They hate that he is different, and want to crush his individuality in every way. Like I said, heartbreaking. Despite this, Brandon shows an inner strength, kind of in a Zen way. He is the tree that doesn't break because it bends. He refuses to give into the bloodthirsty ways of his people. He refuses to let go of the love in his heart for Jackson, the man who taught him how to read and to sign. And for Angelina, and he puts himself in jeopardy to save them, when he family set it up for them to be murdered. Brandon is very young when this book starts, only twenty-one. He's actually several years younger than Angelina, the woman of his dreams. I thought it might be weird that he was so young, and it was certainly different. But again, I like that Reinke wasn't afraid to do this. I also liked that in some ways he is more vulnerable than Angelina. But at the same time, he has an inner strength. Now I did have an issue with Angelina's character. I don't think I truly got to know her. I wish more time had been spent on her backstory, but realizing the shortness of this book, and how compelling Brandon was, I can see why the author chose to focus more on Brandon. I loved the connection between Brandon and Angelina. I do think they were soulmates, complementing each other. Although Angelina was the more experienced, and harder character, Brandon had an inner strength that brought a calm and peace to Angelina. Another pet peeve I had was how beat up Brandon kept getting in this book. He was a really good fighter, but his evil, awful brother was always just that little bit stronger than him. This wasn't really bad in itself, just different. I liked the mythology of this series, although it's a bit different from a lot of the vamp paranormals out right now. That's a good thing. I do feel that there is much more to learn about the Brethren. Right now, they are not really nice vamps in my mind, except for Brandon, Tessa, and Remy. I'm eager to read Remy and Tessa's book, and to find outwhere things unfold after this book was over. Although this wasn't a perfect book, I do love it because of the wonderful character that Reinke has created in Brandon. I just sigh thinking about him.

This is a compelling read, although I normally shy away from vampire stories.

I really quite enjoyed this book! It's a different take on Vampires than I'm used to reading, but that made it all the better! I'll be taking "Dark Hunger", the second book with me to work tonight.

This was a completely different vampire story and I liked that. The fact that the vampire was deaf and mute, was interesting to read, and the author made it work. It was also an IR, which I liked too.

This was such a great read! I was surprised on how original this book was. I loved the fact that the author had the guts to create a hero, the vampire Brandon, vunerable and imperfect character. Usually in novels, the hero is strong and powerful, Brandon in the other hand is not as quite. In fact he is deaf and mute. But he did have some strengths. He is strong enough to endure the horrific abuse from his grandfather and his brother and he is able to resist the urge of bloodlust by standing for his beliefs in preserving humans' lives. I greatly enjoyed his character.

Another turned about this book is the fact that the heroine is African American. This was a total schocker (in a good way) because the majority of romance/thriller novels have white women as being the forefront; plus, the novel's summary and cover did not give any hint about Lina's race. She is a strong woman who in fact is a police officer. Not just that...she is five years older than Brandon! How great is that?!

Though race was mentioned a few times in the novel, it was not emphasized/exaggerated. Lina and Brandon's relationship just appeared to be "true". Something that one might see in real life.

This was such a fascinating read!

    Brandon…*sigh*

So…I’ve read another wonderful, well written engaging book! Dark Thirst is about Brandon who was born as one of the Brethren. When he goes through something really horrible as a child, almost his entire family turns against him, but they feel by his going through the bloodletting, he might redeem himself. Brandon absolutely refuses to do so and when his brother and the Grandfather discover his plans to leave his home, they punish him cruelly.

Lina is a tough cop whose older brother was Brandon’s teacher and who stumbles across Brandon when he manages to get away from his family home. She’s tough, street-wise and not quite sure of her feelings for the younger Brandon.

This book was so good with it’s inclusion of the beginning of a new love, the caring of the teacher and pupil, a different kind of cop/partner relationship, the introduction of the Brethren and the fight with a family that I was cheering loudly during. I wrote to the author and asked “Please tell me something horribly divine happens to the Grandfather by the end of this!” Well, something didn’t, but I have HUGE hopes that in the next book, something will! He so deserves it!!

I am anxiously awaiting the story of Lina/Brandon and Tessa/Rene to continue in Dark Hunger. Great job Sara, kudos!!!

A fantastic story with a wonderful twist on vampire lore. I especially loved Ms Reinke's portrayal of a hero with a 'disability'. She did a masterful job!
