This is challenging book from Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw; at times it is a very uneasy read - I fully recommend it to you.

One of the things you'll notice is that it's a very attractive book - multi-coloured pages and scrapbook/journal format. This doesn't mean it's a light read,...

I didn't finish this. I wanted to like it. I like Shane. I like the ideas. I like the look of the book. But I just couldn't follow the divergent ideas. I'm sure it's a good book that will do a lot of good in the world; I guess it just wasn't for me.

Gorgeous to look at, lovingly thought-provoking and challenging...I have been quoting it to friends for weeks. The theme of the book? As Christians, we are to be above the power struggles of politics, showing through the radical example of our lives a better way to live and love. Never once does Claiborne or Haw suggest a rebellious attitude, though...all their actions seem to stem from love of God and their fellow man.

Keep this in mind that I read this for a class at a christian university. This book has made me ashamed to be a Christian and to question whether I should just give up on Christ. After reading C.S. Lewis's book (for school) I felt a new stronger faith in God, which this book has destroyed. Socialism is a great idea, but it can only work in a world where people are perfect and will not abuse the system. America is far too large a country for this to work, as proved by Russia. The few good ideas in this book are ruined by the main theme. When I first starting reading this book I thought it had been written 50 years ago, when people were very concerned with Christianity in America politics, which was disproved by the mentions of Iraq. I have never thought of America as christian, there are too many different people and religions to believe that. As I read this I lose hope for Americans and Christians.

I do not agree with everything Shane Claiborne teaches but he is an acting Christian not just another person. He actually walks out what he believes and for that I applaud him. Interesting Ideas and Thesis

A very 'post modern' critique of western 'christian' culture. Full of radical truth!

I stopped reading this for awhile for a few reasons.

    1. I like to take notes in books, but this is not the kind of book you can do that with because every page is a piece of art work of its own.

    2. The presidential elections are not for another 3 years... I bought it with the intent to read it before this last election.

    3. Its just not as good as "The Irresistible Revolution"... but I will pick it up again and give it another chance.

Just like in "Irresistible Revolution," Shane Claiborne (co-authoring with Chris Haw) has written an irreverent and mischievous challenge to Christians in America. They are simultaneously hopeful and critical, gentle and uncompromising. It's a hard balance to be sure, and this book is not for the faint-of-heart, Christian or otherwise. It shows America for what it is, not the Pax Americana we've all be recently swallowing from the media, government, and even the pulpit. Read at your own risk, because this book wants to mess with you and make you think. I know I'll be thinking about this stuff for a long time and responding accordingly.

This book was AMAZING! I couldn't put it down and spent many days with out sleep just to get through it! It was for me a wonderful awaking of how as Christians we can get stuck in to a certain way of thinking and acting. I love how Shane challenged todays "church" and got me to think outside the box. Despite the OBVIOUS political undertone that flowed through the book I absolutely loved this book and have recommended it to several people!
