“Besides all the wonders, I get a huge kick out of how Doyle uses narrative technique. The third-person limited allows him to do such great things with plot (suspense, since we know just what he wants us to know when he wants us to know it), mood (tense, since we channel Watson's uneasiness), character (both Watson's through his deciphering of Holmes, and Holmes through the filter of Watson), and irony (multiple points of view allow for ironic clashes and misprisions).
It's similar to the use of the narrator in the French contes fantastiques of the 19th century--wondering about the lineage, and how it all got back to France in the form of Maurice Leblanc's magnificent, debonair Arsene Lupin.”
“My first Sherlock Holmes and I loved it. What took me so long? More to come.”

I read this once when I was much younger and thought, "Well, that was okay," but now that I've gotten older I understand so much more of the novel and it's perfect. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has become one of my favorite authors almost overnight.”

OK, so, I've always been a big fan of the great detective, mainly because my dad got me into it. My 8th grade English teacher actually said during our unit on Holmes that I could probably teach the class everything we needed to know (which would have been fun, but the principal wouldn't let me)! One day, my dad said 'hon, you've gotta read the first Sherlock Holmes, it's really good'. So I did, and now I love it too!”

A Study in Scarlet - Masterpiece!!
The sign of Four - Not as good but fairly enjoyable.”
