Second effort for Dick Francis and his son Felix Francis. The main character is a restaraunt owner and chef. I think I enjoyed Silks a little better because I liked the main character more in that one. Not the first one I would pick up, but worth reading if you are a Dick Francis fan.

Not as good as some other recent Francis collaborations. A well-known chef in a racing town suffers serious damage to his reputation when almost everyone attending an event catered by him comes down with food poisoning. To make matters, worse, as he caters a private event at a major race the next day, a bomb explodes, killing some of his customers. And he needsd to find out who and why, to save his own future.

I was happy to read a new Dick Francis book and was drawn irresistably into the inner dealings of chefs and restaurants. It might have taken a smidge too long to find out who the culprit and what the big crime was--and then the end seemed kind of rushed. But overall, enjoyable!

I have loved Dick Francis for years, so I am always eager when I see a new one come out. This book was disappointing to me though, as was the previous book in which he collaborated with his son. The writing is much less sophisticated than in his previous books; the plot is thinner and the characters are far less developed than usual. I could see flashes of Dick Francis brilliance, but overall this book was disappointing to me because I love his books so much. I am hoping that he and his son will work out their kinks and be able to produce more works that live up to the standard he has held for so long.

One of the interesting things about this book is that when writing it, Francis consulted with Gordon Ramsey!
