“The overall story concept was good, but the delivery was a little flat. The outcome was predictable, the majority of the characters were pretty stock (in fact, the most interesting character was the dog), and the author over used certain phrases such as "every breath was a sob." Additionally, she tried to get into too many characters' heads which didn't allow any of them to really develop fully. It wasn't a bad book by any means, but it wasn't great either. It could have been so much better.”

After being forced to steal a necklace, she is hunted down by the victim of the crime, Bastian sal Vere. He explains that the necklace was strung with tears, and that without it, Bastian cannot break the curse that is destroying his family. He orders Melke to regain the necklace, in exchange for her brother to be healed. But she had given the necklace to the salamanders, the fire breathing creatures that live underground. She must risk her own life. Meanwhile, Bastian becomes involved in solving a brutal murder of a young pregnant girl in the town of Theirry. This is a strong character-based fantasy, full of romantic tension and gritty storylines.

“I picked this off the shelf randomly so I wasn't expecting much, but this was a very enjoyable read! The plot was attention-grabbing and fast-paced enough that I read this within a day. Strong characters and great resolution of the plot. I think I have a weak spot for plotlines that involve pride and sacrifice, so this book was perfect.”

References of sex in this book a few times.”

Bujold, in her speech, talked about how fantasy and SF are about politics, and the bigger, more earth-shattering the arena, the better. This story has a Small, personal arena. The heroine has stolen a necklace which she is giving to salamanders (two-legged beings connected to the fire element) to retrieve her brother from them. He was caught when he tried to steal from them. But when she gets him back, he's badly injured and dying.
The necklace is the one thing that will break a curse on the hero and his family. He MUST have it back, and he hates the heroine for stealing it from them, for dire things will happen to him--or more likely his sister--if he doesn't get it back. Hero and heroine make a deal. If his sister's healing can save her brother, the heroine will go back into the salamanders' den and steal the necklace back.
The story moves slowly--but it doesn't feel like it. (And you may know how I dislike slow-paced stories.) The brother slowly heals. The hero and heroine learn how to see each other as real persons. There's hate, and guilt, and sacrifice, and desperation, and revelations, and in the end, there's absolution and forgiveness and love. This is truly a lovely story. No wonder it was a RITA finalist. Didn't win, but it was lovely.”
“This book was just great, theres no other way to put it. Very funny and crafty. Keeps you interested with every turn of the page.”
