I was just not into this book... it took me 2 months to complete... I could put it down and be content not to pick it back up.

I loved this book. Jack Daniels enters the pantheon of great female cops. What a page turner, I read it in one sitting.

I have to say I liked this book better than the first volumes of other 'current' detective stories. There were no gaping holes in the behavior of the detective. No falling in love with an obvious suspect (I'm looking at you Kinsey Millhone and J.P. Beaumont) and she wasn't inept in her detecting (Stephanie Plum). The writing was crisp and compelling, and the characters clearly drawn.

One thing that did detract (for me) and almost reduced it from a four-star, 'really liked it' rating was how close the story took us to the mind of the psychotic serial killer. Yes, this indeed raised the stakes and made the resolution more satisfying. But, ewww. This book is not for the squeamish. I was also not quite convinced that a killer who could stay hidden for so long and plays off of power would have put himself into such vulnerable positions, almost getting caught, in the process. But these could be excused by his inflated opinion of his skills.

Only recommended if you're into psychotic killers.

Tough female detective "Jack" Daniels finds herself investigating a serial killer. Not only is she the detective she is targeted by the criminal as his next victim. This is a great thriller! The abuse of the women is described in graphic detail.

An exciting new (for me) series. "Jack" Daniels - Lt Detective, Vicious Crimes Unit in Chicago - goes up against serial killer "The Gingerbread Man." He gets close to her a few too many times, but it's tightly written and moves fast! I'll read more of this series.

not bad... i was afraid after reading Afraid under the Kilborn name that i would be disappointed in these books. i thought there would be too much funny and not enough scary... but it was very good... nice twisted balance of funny and scary and intense... i will read more!
