I enjoyed "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho and had high hopes for this book even after the first few chapters. Then, when he introduced the "Great Mother" or the feminine side of God manifested in the main character, I felt like it got really weird. There are a few decent developments in the story and he has some interesting ideas about this feminine divine but it comes off super New Agey (if you are into that you will like this) for an author with a Catholic background. I thought it was strange that the "protector" characters professed a dislike of each other but wanted to grow together on this spiritual journey. It seemed like he was attempting to simplify the concept of LOVE but it just came across as this disconnected sharing...if that makes sense. Anyway, not my favorite book by this author.

Thanks Evonne, I enjoyed Alchemist too. Most likely that I agree with you about the strange idea of God's feminine side. I have read that idea in other Coelho's book, "By the River Piedra I sat down and wept". I wonder if you have ever read that book, I just wanna ask is the concept in The Witch of Portobello is the same as By the River Piedra I sat down and wept? Thank you Evonne
