Liked It“I really loved this story. It's not an easy read. You really have to stick with it. Sometimes it seemed to get bogged down with story upon story within story. But it all adds up to make you fall in love with all of the characters. Elizabeth Gilbert's sense of humor is unmatched in my opinion. She...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I really wanted to give this a higher rating, because I did enjoy the book. There was just too much crass stuff for me to recommend it to anyone! I realize that lobstermen tend to be tough and more than likely swear frequently, but I don't want to read all those swears! I did like Ruth, the...” see full review » see other reviews » |

On Fort Niles, an island near Maine, most men are lobster fishermen. Ruth Thomas, born in 1958, lives here, but is sent to a school on the mainland by Mr Ellis, a rich man who lives on the island. Her mother and grandmother have looked after the Ellis family as a kind of servants for a long time, and Mr. Ellis now wants to look after Ruth.
Ruth's father is a lobster fisherman who is not very interested in his daughter, while her mother moved away when Ruth was 11. Ruth spends most of her time at the neighbors, a family of seven sons, with the mother being happy treating Ruth as her daughter.
But Ruth is finished listening to what Mr. Ellis wants of her. She's 18 and wants to live on the island forever. She's not sure what to do, as lobster fishing is not something she enjoys.
The story is mainly about Ruth at the age of 18/19, living at the island, without a job, spending most of her time with some much older adults, such as the neighbor, and a man who's afraid of the sea, but wants to open a museum with her help.
The book is full of interesting characters and the story is great too, well written. ”
“I loved this book. I listened to the audio edition read by Allyson Ryan and she was perfect - such a great storytelling voice and perfect accents (to an uneducated ear). This was a fun book to listen to. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. This book immersed me in a place and among people I new nothing about. I would heartily recommend it to anyone who loves a good tale and isn't too squeamish about bad language.”

There was just too much crass stuff for me to recommend it to anyone! I realize that lobstermen tend to be tough and more than likely swear frequently, but I don't want to read all those swears! I did like Ruth, the main character, although I could not agree with the cover blurb that called her Austenesque. There really wasn't anything Austen-like about this. ”

However, without realizing what I was doing, I started reading this amazing book about one woman's spiritual journey. Now, I want to go on the same journey she took. If only . . .”

I've read and re-read Eat pray love a few times now since the summer and had HUGE expectations for this book. Maybe that's where it went wrong :)
All I can say: I hated this book! It lacked all the fun, insightfulness and beautifulnes that Eat pray love has. The story is dull and weak and the 2 reasons I didn't quit reading is that 1. I don't like stopping half way and 2. I kept hoping it would get better.
It didn't :) ”
