I am so happy to be able to know what is in The Ramayana. This book is extremely well-known in India and many other parts of the world, and some people use it as scripture. I expected to be bored, but this short, prose version was easily accessible and fun to read. It reminded me a lot of Homer....

I am so happy to be able to know what is in The Ramayana. This book is extremely well-known in India and many other parts of the world, and some people use it as scripture. I expected to be bored, but this short, prose version was easily accessible and fun to read. It reminded me a lot of Homer. Sometimes like The Iliad, sometimes like The Odessy, but you can definitely see the similarities--gods are born (or reincarnated) as humans and do extraordinary things, wars are fought over women, gods in heaven take sides and help one or the other, honor is a huge motivator, etc. It is worth reading, just to be informed about the interesting and fantastical stories that take place during the life and love of Rama and Sita.

I am reading a full version of Ramayana after a long time. R.K.Narayan writes beautifully. One sees the frailities of Rama in his mortal human form. Reading the book, I realised that it is not only about the life of Rama, Sita, and other characters, i noticed the same patterns that govern our thought processes in the events in the book - how hard it is to be just, fair, compassionate and what seems a reasonable decision in the moment turns out to be a rather imprudent one in hindsight. And the mind thinks - "If Only". And yet what is wise is to say - that happened. That's it. No more, no less.

It's pretty bad when I HATE a book..... It gets better towards the end.... but..... still..... it is NOT BELIEVABLE! If you do decide to read it for yourself and take the chance of losing your mind... then GOOD LUCK!!!! (you will need it!)

This is the story of Rama and Hunuman's quest to free Sita from the demon Ravana in the land of Lanka.
