I’m a huge fan of ‘first contact’ science-fiction, so when I came across The Eternity Artifact and read about the intriguing artificial object discovered by mankind, I had to pick it up.

I made it to the end of the novel, but I found it disappointing. Although it had such potential, I felt like Modesitt didn’t do anything with his inventive creation. The multiple characters were stereotypical and not at all interesting; I never became emotionally invested in their experiences. The interaction seemed awkward, and while the explanation of the foreign object was surprisingly satisfying, it was overshadowed by the unrealistic and clunky characters. Modesitt obviously meant for the novel to be an exploration of humanity rather than science, but the humanity fell so short that it left me frustrated. It’s a shame that such an interesting sci-fi concept was wasted in favor of sub-par dialog and tired dramatics.
