This was the best book I have ever read. It was amazing, defiantly worthwhile to read. This was a fantasy story about a woods guide named Richard and a Confessor named Kahlen. They went on a quest to stop a power hungry ruler named Darken Rahl. Also Richard wanted to find a way for him and Kahlen...

Goodkind's language is trite, his characters devoid of realism, and his attempts at evoking emotion labored. This is no wordsmith, just a guy with too much time on his hands and too many words in his head.

I randomly came across the TV series on my Netflix while I was sick with the flu one week. I ended up watching the entire season in two days. I had no idea it was a book until after I had watched all the episodes but when I found out I immediately ran to get the first book in the series from the library.

I know, I know--the book and tv show/movie will always be different. I accept that. ...Most of the time. What I had a problem with was Kahlan's lack of assertiveness and inner strength that I feel made her a great character on the show. The parts of the book with Darken Rahl's right hand man (I forget his name, now)--you know, the one who would molest the young boys?--man those parts were hard to swallow. Also, parts of the book were a bit too focused on the details. Pages and pages of details where a paragraph would have sufficed.

Overall, though, I enjoyed the book, and plan to read the rest of the series. I liked getting a more in-depth look at Richard's quest as Seeker, and am curious about what the future holds for him--and Kahlan.

Fantasytic! Most awesomest book I've ever read! The love, the battle, the prophecy is all so good. I wanna read it over and over again!! Richard and Kahlan show that love doesn't have to interfere with destiny and together they overshadow that.

wow, this was a great book. instead of the normal hum-drum fairy tale style common to most books about magical things, this book was really good. not only was there storyline, there was also a good deal of social commentary. zedd is my favorite character, but they all are so real as you read, that it is difficult to really narrow it down to just the one. a very good book, which i will probably end up re-reading at one point or another.

In the typical fantasy novel form Richard Cypher, stands as a lone hero against the evil forces of Darken Rahl who threatens to claim dominion over the entire world. The Wizard’s First Rule, the first novel in Terry Goodkind’s series, The Sword of Truth, follows the fantasy plot to the point of becoming cliché. The main characters, though entertaining, are extremely stereotypical: the brave and selfless hero, the strong and beautiful heroine, the wise old wizard, etc.

Admittedly Goodkind is not a master of writer. As every good writer knows it is important to show the reader your story through description rather than tell about it. Though he often tells the reader what emotion a character feels rather than allowing them to see it through description Goodkind still manages to engage the reader with ample descriptions of settings and actions.

Despite the plot’s fantasy cliché I truly enjoyed The Wizard’s First Rule. I haven’t read a fantasy novel that I truly enjoyed since Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials series. Once I had finished the book I found myself wanting to read the next installment in the series so that I could find out what happens next in Richard’s story. Although I did find faults in Goodkind’s writing I also found myself greatly entertained by the plot as it unfolded. I would definitely recommend this book!

A very decent fantasy book. And although people with limited imagination tend to label any fantasy as Star Wars/ LOTR derivative, I don't think this book is. Its beautifully conceived universe is its strength, but it's let down a number of times by trite dialogue and 'too much agreement' among the principal characters. Definitely worth a read for any fantasy fan.
