“Kind of a mix of what's good about the 'Belgariad' and what's bad about 'The Dreamers.' The fact that it is only one book instead of a series is a good thing. ”

“one of my favorite books of all time... although I didn't care much for edding's other books. This one really stood out as a one time novel and not part of a series.”

I read this book before I had actually read any other books by Eddings and the style of the book and the characters was delightfully new for a young reader like me who had just began to move from children's and young adult books to actual adult literature.
However, after I'd read more from Eddings, I came to realize that all his characters are always quite similar, and his stories pretty much follow the same pattern no matter what.
But I still cherish this book somehow. Maybe it's because of the sarcastic main character Althalus. Maybe. ”“Well, I enjoy it which usually sufices as a recommendation of a book for something I'll reread. Solid fantasy fiction, no surprises and follows the fantasy template nicely. I like it.....”

It really does. It feels like someone molested my fond memories of fantasy novels.”“Again the same set of characters that are popular in any of Eddings' novels. The story was very entertaining though and set in a very well constructed and believable world.”
