The equivolent of a BA in mountaineering. Teaches the essentials thoroughly, although it cannot supplement actual experience and work in the field. Best if followed up by Extreme Alpinism by Mark Twight if you want to move more toward the vertical realm of alpinism/

If you're interested in mountaineering, this book is a must. It not only introduces the outdoors, from the very basics on, it goes into more detail then I've ever known a book to go into.

A must read for anyone serious.

Literally the outdoorsman's bible. Knots, gear, conditions, preparation, emergencies, first aid, survival... it's in there. I have climbed a few of the US 14ers, and the wisdom gleaned from this volume was invaluable.

I have both the 1st and 7th editions. Cherish them both and especially like the silly cartoons in the early version. New mountaineers sleep use this book as their pillow at night.

I am a nerd and I like reading manuals. This is one of the best technical and comprehensive manuals about mountaineering.
