Teaches the essentials thoroughly, although it cannot supplement actual experience and work in the field. Best if followed up by Extreme Alpinism by Mark Twight if you want to move more toward the vertical realm of alpinism/”

A must read for anyone serious.”
“Literally the outdoorsman's bible. Knots, gear, conditions, preparation, emergencies, first aid, survival... it's in there. I have climbed a few of the US 14ers, and the wisdom gleaned from this volume was invaluable.”

“I have both the 1st and 7th editions. Cherish them both and especially like the silly cartoons in the early version. New mountaineers sleep use this book as their pillow at night.”
