This work should appear on every feminist literary canon. Marxist ideologies are central to Wolf's thesis. Beauty is bought and not cheaply. This obsession with a feminine ideal has led our society to a false light or ignus fatuus. We are seeking out an illusion, not a reality. Companies...

Book was published in 1991 and a lot of the information was out of date. It covered how women were influenced by the media but the information about the Surgical Age was long outdated and it only just anticipated the impact of beauty standards on men, an issue that has grown considerably in...

Disappointed that it didn't really address body image concerns for non-white, non-middle class women. Still a must-read though.

This is a culturally and socially important book. Women and men, parents and consumers: all should read it. Wolf advances some provocative arguments about the link between consumerism, patriarchy, and the origins/maintenance of our beauty myths. Readers may conclude that while it's still a largely Western-centric treatment of these dilemmas, it's still a book that hard-hitting and eye-opening.

I didn't finish it. It covered very important topics, but it didn't hold my attention at the time.

Still very relevant, even more so now I think. A book of our times. Very illuminating. Great book for women and even better for men.

Wonderful study of how beauty, tricked up for the current generation in scientific claptrap, is the true religion of many women.

Very thought provoking book to challenge how advertisers have conditioned women to think "beauty" is more important than anything else in our lives.
