A good story set in Thatcherian times, reflecting the desire for social advancement
and showing the beginning of aids and the price of selfish pursuit of materialism and hedonism. The duplicitous family are full of hypocrisy, greed and gluttony, wanting to preserve their own power at all costs. A lack of humanitarian feeling shines right through this story as well as elitism and extreme obsession with self advancement. The main character does show some humility, especially in the care of their manic depressive daughter. But the class divide is clearly shown here, and the callousness of those in power who will go to any lenghts to keep it.
