1.5 stars. I really wanted to like this book. It is set in Jasper, Alberta (I live in Calgary). It starts off with Doctor Byrne climbing a nearby glacier and falling into a crevasse in 1898, so it sounds promising. But alas - I could never get into it! My mind wandered the entire time I read it,...

Very interesting book. A different style of writing - hard to describe. There were aspects that were a bit hard to follow, and some areas were not as well developed as I would have liked, but overall an interesting read. It is printed on nice heavyweight paper!

Winner of the Writers Guild of Alberta Best First Book Award, this is possibly the best "first book" I've ever read, although it won't appeal to those who prefer the "classical paradigm" novel. Wharton's writing has an exquisite quality about it that good poetry has. In that regard, it is similar to the writing of John Berger (To the Wedding) and Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient).

My mind wandered the entire time I read it, so I had trouble concentrating and following what was going on. I do know that Doctor Byrne (an Englishman) returned to Jasper years later and was studying the glaciers. There were lots of other characters as well with things going on, but I just wasn't interested! I think it was the writing style. Sad to say, I just didn't like it.

This book has a wonderful, mystical quality to it. I really enjoyed it.
