Cast of Characters/Important People

  • Croaker: The Black Company's physician and annalist. As annalist his is the voice that narrates most of the chapters. His rank is not mentioned, but it is clear he is a senior officer within the Company.
  • The Captain: The leader of the Black Company.
  • The Lieutenant: The Black Company's second in command.
  • Silent: One of the Black Company's wizards, so named because he never speaks.
  • Goblin: One of the Black Company's wizards, so named because of his face and height. Constantly spars with One-Eye.
  • One-Eye: One of the Black Company's wizards, he has only one eye and is the brother of Tom-Tom. Constantly spars with Goblin.
  • Tom-Tom: One of the Black Company's wizards, so named for his drum-tapping habit. Brother to One-Eye.
  • Elmo: Sergeant of the Black Company.
  • Raven: Northern recruit to the Black Company, of former affluence.
  • Darling: A deaf orphan girl adopted by Raven early on in the Northern Campaigns.
  • Soulcatcher: One of the Ten Who Were Taken, servant to The Lady and patron of the Black Company in the North.
  • The Lady: Former wife of the Dominator, current and unrivaled ruler in the North. A powerful sorceress, she commands the Ten Who Were Taken.
  • The Limper: One of the Ten Who Were Taken, in constant competition with Soulcatcher and a personal enemy of Raven. So named because of his prominent limp.
