This novel was a bit slow for me at first. His writing style of hopping back and forth between the old man Godric telling the story, and the young man Godric acting out the story didn't connect for me at first. But once it did, I absolutely loved it.

This is my favorite book EVER. It may not be the greatest literary accomplishment or the culmination of all history, but it is the most enjoyable and enlightening read I've ever had. Maybe that says more about me than it does about the book. I would venture to say that this is Buechner's masterpiece; which is saying a lot. Buechner is the most creative author I can think of. I enjoy his writing more than anyone else's. I can't say why...it just resonates more with me than any other writer. Godric was up for a Pulitzer the year it was written, probably because of the lyrical prose and the ingenious depiction of the inner-life of a medieval saint. If that sounds dull to you, that's because we've made saints dull. Buechner brings Godric to life and reveals both his shadows and sublimities. This book is about life itself, as cheesy as that sounds. And yet "Godric" is "red meat and dark beer" as Lewis would say. (Even though Lewis never read Godric.) Buechner takes the raw materials of redemption and makes something that transcends the genre of fiction. This book is TRUE. That's about all I can say.

A rollicking linguistic tour de force and a wonderfully humorous exploration of an actual 12th century saint and some poor fool's efforts to pen his hagiography with enough dark twists and earthy humor to keep a Capricorn happy.
