This is a very good book. Though it is very long it is a fast read with an ending you most likely won't forget

It was all right, not what I was expecting. I think I was expecting a historical fiction novel, instead it was more romance than historical fiction. No graphic scenes mind you, it was written in 1944. Still, I was left feeling disappointed.
Anyway, I digress, Amber St Clare becomes Charles Stuart's mistress through much scheming and intrigue. She starts out as a naive country girl who soon learns the ways of shady London. She goes from debtors prison to becoming a wealthy lady.

I have just starting reading this book and I must say after the prologue I became disappointed. From the get go Amber is a spoiled rotten obnoxious brat of a girl. I have only just gotten to the part where he leaves to go to the America’s and leaves her behind but I just could not stand this character any longer so I had to put the book away for now. I hope when I have better patients and I pick the book up again later it will get better.

I don't read a lot of bodice rippers -- but I read this when I was just a kid and loved it then so I decided to try it again when I was looking for a big fat fun book. And it is.

i read this book over twenty years ago and I have never forgotten it. The way women suffered in those days, not to mention the suffering incurred just by wearing the clothes they did then - the social structure, the rigidity of where you belong compared with the liberty of today, was brought home vividly in this book and i can really experience what it would be like to like in those times. A great romance, silly girl, but what else could she do but follow her heart.
