Dido Twite was plucked out of the ocean and nursed to health by Nate, a member of a whaling ship which is chasing a pink whale. Captain Casket implores Dido to befriend his daughter, a shy, frightened child who hasn't left her closet since her mother died some months back.

Dido succeeds in bringing the daughter, Dutiful Penitence, out of her shell and accompanies her to live with an ornery aunt who is even more wicked than she outwardly seems (and that takes quite some doing). Along the way, they uncover a plot to kill a British king and find themselves the target of some nasty villains.
