“HATED it...never have i finished a book and disgustedly said, "what the fuck" out loud, in public, and wasn't embarrassed. GRRRR!”

There is too much taxonomy and Latin for a young child to enjoy it, or for me to enjoy stumbling over the words aloud.”

First of all, I assumed 20,000 Leagues was an ocean depth that they were trying to dive to--sort of a journey to the center of the earth, except in the ocean. I would quickly learn that 20,000 leagues (or 69,046 miles) refers to a horizontal distance, not a depth. A better title may have been 20,000 Leagues Around the World. With that clarified, it was an excellent adventure book. Each part of the world's oceans they visited was described in great detail--sometimes too much detail which slows down the book. The Professor and Captain Nemo were both very interesting characters who were well written. Unlike most modern books it doesn't fully resolve itself or answer the various dangling questions that most books tie up by the final chapter. Not a bad thing to be left wondering, but unusual for most books now-a-days. I give it five stars for originality, characters and setting.”

I wanted to read it because lately i've been really into reading classics, but it's not typically my first-choice kind of read. It's kind of slow and redundant, with little dialogue and mostly descriptions of either the ocean or the different creatures in it. i would have liked a lot more action and a lot less talking about the makeup and genus of the different species of crustaceans. ”
