“I did not like this book at all. I only finished it because I do like Ms. Tan so much.
This book was filled with characters that I didn't like and really thought were stupid. Won't be a keeper.”
“The plot is so fantastic that it carries the book. The depiction of American tourism makes you think.”Tea Cake wrote this review Friday, February 4, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“"I really enjoyed this book. Particularly how Amy Tan created a narrator who was both a character and someone who knew the motives and stories of most of the other characters. It was also a good bit of history on the conflict in Burma. The political situation Amy Tan discusses when she wrote this a few years ago still are true today."

“Huge Amy Tan fan, but consider this her worst book. If I'd read this first I'd likely never have picked up another of hers. It seemed to me over ambitious, horribly paced, stilted.
In the afterword, she talks about wanting to address the issue of how to use what we have (money etc) for the good of others, and how hard it is to decide how to do that, when, if and so on...she also talks about influence from the Canterbury tales. If she'd put this in the beginning I think the book would have been more tolerable.
For a few brief moments during the read I enjoyed myself, until the pacing made me want to wish I'd just "let the fish drown!!!"”

“Not Tan's best work. Unfortunately, the pressure is on her as such a gifted writer, but I was expecting better work from her skill level. A story too heavily similar to previous Tan works.”ChipperCoathanger wrote this review Wednesday, December 29, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
