I forget how I came across this book, but it was wonderful, wonderful. Well, to start off with, they're all lost love stories in upper-middle-class settings. More than one description involving pears and brie drying on a table in the aftermath of a party or some group gathering. The characters are all older, but not the wiser. They look at their past, still blinking and wondering.

What James Salter especially grasps is something I'm surprised doesn't appear more often in literature,...
