I really like this book. It’s about culture shock and cultural assimilation, and about the connections between people in different times and places. And it’s about women’s lives. There are some especially great older characters.

Having grown up with a bunch of Cuban gf's I was kind of disappointed with this book. I didn't feel it adequately described what it really is to grow up in Havanah or to be Cuban for that matter.

Didn't love as much as I loved Monkey Hunting--the characters weren't as memorable.

A simple family story, spanning multiple generations, detailing life in Cuba, and the desire to always want what you can rarely have. The language was lovely throughout most of the novel, and the story was simple, yet intriguing. A good read, but nothing too astonishing or groundbreaking.

Divided by the Cuban revolution, this family struggle with their personal views on politics. There is the more conservative grandmother who refuses to leave her country. Then the older daughter dreams of having a better life elsewhere. The novel introduces the troubles of Cuba and the strong personal thoughts of people living their during this time of change. I found this book to be very unique, filled with diverse memorable characters.

Being of Cuban descent myself, I thought this book was great. Though it does go back and forth in time, through the eyes of various characters, once I got into it, I didn't find it hard to follow at all. I think this is a great read for anyone who is Cuban or American-Cuban, or for anyone who wants to better understand the Cuban and American-Cuban psyche.

This was a disappointment. Although Garcia is probably a marvelous poet, there was a lack of structure and continuity to this story that drive me nuts. It is a series of memories, with no particular connection except that the characters are (mostly) women in three generations from one Cuban family. Some are emigres living in America, some are still in Cuba post-revolution. Other than that, little holds this series of blurry snapshots together, and for me that is a problem. I enjoy novels with multiple points of view, stream of consciousness structures, and unconventional organization, Garcia's novel was, for me, simply chaotic and thereby did not allow em to connect emotionally or intellectually with any of the characters. They weren't ona journey anywhere, they simply "were," which ultimately I find boring.

I had a difficult time getting into any of the characters, or really caring about them. I liked The Aquero Sisters much, much better.

Very lyrical novel that moves back and forth in time between a mother and her children and grandchildren both in Cuba and New York City. Humor, romance, longing, andmother/daughter dynamics.

Reading this right now, and thoroughly enjoying it... will have more to add once I get further in.
