“I cried in the end of this story as I'm rather emotional and the elephant symbolising the colonized countries/people with its unfair death made me hate the British so much!! Like Saramago's killing of the thief at the beginning of "Blindness" just because the soldiers were afraid of him... The elephant wasn't savage, wild, but they wanted it dead.. I tend to believe this foreshadowed the dying British Empire as well, thinking that injustice leads to political self-destruction.”
“I love the actual essay about the shooting of the elephant, it describes how the pressures of others can lead you commit horrible acts. :'(”
