Whatever paths my stories take, they always lead to realms of Heroism and Humor—probably because I view courage and laughter as the best defense against what Shakespeare called “the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.” The seed for this quirky adventure came to me in a dream. In my mind it first seemed a child's tale, but once planted on the page, it blossomed in language and scope into a fable for all ages. It features an unlikely heroine, a crafty king, action, surprises, and singing cabbages. What else do we need? Social significance?… Okay, it has that, too.
