“Summer is supposed to mean relaxing and hanging with your friends but for one group of Hawthorne Lake girls, it means revenge! Willa Ames-Rowan had it all. Everyone loved her. She was popular and pretty, witty and smart, and above all, she was nice. The officials want to call Willa's drowning an accident, but everyone knows who's responsible. The Gregory's can get away with anything, including - it seems - murder. But Willa's friends aren't going to let this one go. They're going to do anything and everything they can to take down the Gregory family once and for all.
It's definitely appropriate to compare this one to Revenge, a show that's a big addiction for a lot of tv viewers these days. There's just no getting around that connection! But the Roecker sisters have still managed to put together a unique and enthralling read that - aside from the fact that it's about revenge amongst country clubbers - stands on its own two feet.
The book begins with Willa's murder and everyone knows who's responsible. That's actually never in question. The mystery, though, lies in how Willa's friends will manage to take down this seemingly unbeatable family and in the actual events that led to Willa's murder.
Each section of the book is told from the perspective of a different girl in the group, something I particularly liked because it really gives the reader a chance to get to know them and understand them all that much better. Each section also ends with another piece of the night of Willa's death. As the story unfolds, it soon becomes clear that not everything is as cut and dry as the girls would have you believe. It's not that they're hiding things per se but that their pieces are like a puzzle and only in finally putting them all together do you get the entire story.
This is another great teen mystery from SOHO - and a perfect summer read, at that!”
