Deeply engrossing, Dick’s style tends to be very straightforward, without any of the superfluous flourishes so often found in science fiction. Although the world is populated by radioactive dust, hovercars, androids and various high-tech gadgetry, the storytelling is fluid and never bogged down by elaborate, technical descriptions. Acting out a philosophical examination of what it means to be human, the danger and confusion of group think dynamics and the hypocrisy of empathic living, the characters are at turns sympathetic, exasperating and unnerving. This is one of the rare books where the action moves super-swiftly and, at the same time, dragged on, leaving the reader feeling a little unbalanced. A true classic of the science fiction genre!
