Most of the book is geared towards reviewing the in-depth historical context behind the shiite/sunni conflicts today in the Middle East. Though the first hundred + + pages are slow, the pace really picks up in chapter 8 when Vali Nasr develops his main thesis. Very interesting reading, once you get past the first part. Definitely recommended for all those who yearn to expand beyond the myopic, naive geopolitical viewpoints advocated by mainstream media in the US, towards a real, multifaceted...

If you want a history lesson of the Sunni-Shia differences in the Middle East, this is your book. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking just for a new book to pick up.
