this book was OK, it did not keep my interest enough to pick up the second one in the series. it really barely held my interest all the way to the end. The author has this way of not describing the setting, scene, or characters, but will have action and dialogue happening...or she describes...

I read this series in high school in the 90's and have re-read in many times over the years. The seond book, "Killashandra" is my favorite of the trilogy but this first is fabulous as well. Having both a Geology and music background, I found the idea of 'singing crystal' and all the uses of crystals in the series very interesting.

Anne McCaffrey is one of THE best writers. When she wrote about the Crystal Thrall, I could hear all of the crystals singing and it was deafeningly loud and so beautiful. I fealt the crystals vibrating and the pain when the connection was broken. It truly took my breath away. It was an experience that I didn't expect.

I tread this one repeatedly when I was looking for direction in my own life. It's a great story on the theme of how when one dorr closes, another one opens.

While I found this series to be weak overall, the first novel (which really stands alone) is excellent and remains my favourite McCaffrey novel to this day. The other two volumes are politics and mystery, this is about self-discovery and reminds me of the Harper Hall trilogy in the slice-of-life moments.

First in a series. An interesting world and an interesting character. Read them all.

I've probably read through this trilogy a dozen times and I still enjoy it. This read-through, I've been struck by the computers... Anne McCaffrey is right-on in how much they've become a part of day to day life but a some details are very outdated. For instance, no cell phones or e-mail related technology exists and when they need to get a document from one computer to another they print it out from one terminal and the "insta-reader" translates it into the other. I just love her strong characters and the story itself keeps me turning those pages even after multiple reads!

this book was OK, it did not keep my interest enough to pick up the second one in the series. it really barely held my interest all the way to the end. The author has this way of not describing the setting, scene, or characters, but will have action and dialogue happening...or she describes one aspect way too much, and another not at all. It makes it quite difficult to follow

I love this series! Anne McCaffrey has a special way with books, she comes up with fresh and wonderful stories that never leave your memory. The whole idea of crystals and how they are mined are interesting, the mix between music and muscle and the downsides of obsessions. Read these books in order but read them all they just keep getting better and better.

I first read this book when I was about 8 or 9 (though admittedly some aspects of the story went completely over my head ). It has been one of my favorites ever since. The whole series is fantastic but this one will always be my favorite of the series.
I do not know how many times I have read it.
