After being somewhat disappointed with "Armageddon's Children," I decided to go back to where it all started for Brooks, and found the "Sword of Shannara" much more to my liking. Characters were well developed and the pacing was excellent. The battle sequences were descriptive and interesting...

He got better later, but Brooks' first book is a pale ripoff of JRR Tolkien's far better Lord of the Rings books. I couldn't finish this thing. It was awful.

This is the start of an epic journey that turns into so much more than you could ever imagine when starting this book. Each character must overcome their own daemons and this makes them all the more human as they try to live up to whatever destiny has planned for them

I loved this series when I was a teenager so thought I'd pick them up again. Still great book after all these years.

Such a good book! Starts off not that interesting and moves into very interesting. Had a hard time putting it down. Really enjoyed it. The end definitely keeps you interested in the series and makes you want to read the next book to find out what happens.

At first I had problems due to some similarities with LotR. Tall, mysterious stranger that everyone's heard of visits a little town where men live that are known for their short stature... There were a few other bits as well of course. I enjoyed the story more as I actually got farther into it. But. There is SOMETHING about Brooks' writing that apparently just does not flow in my reading mind. For some reason, this was just hard to read for me. I'll be reading the other two in the trilogy, but after that I think I won't be reading any more of his work.

I read this before I read The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I really liked this book but didn't realize until later it owes a lot to LOTR.

This is such a obvious rip-off of the Lord of the Rings it is not even amusing.

Half way through - finding huge similarities to LOTR... in storyline & characters, and yes, still feel the same now that I have finished. Not a bad read, but not the best epic fantasy ever (IMHO).
